There's a difference between knowing the path and walking the path.

A quiet place we can all talk...

Hello all!

Boy, you don't know how much I've wanted to respond to comments and share what I have in my head regarding this writing project, but I felt it would be best to try to keep with the premise as much as possible. But, the story is at a good pausing point so I thought I'd suspend the facade a bit. I want to ask some questions and get some feedback, and I also wanted to give the opportunity for anyone interested to ask me questions or offer up criticisms, suggestions, or whatever. I'll be fully interactive here and would be happy to discuss.

First of all, I want to thank everyone who has been reading and commenting. I've enjoyed writing this story, and I greatly appreciate the feedback. It's fun and interesting reading the comments, especially knowing in my head where things are going. I hope the story is enjoyable to you and is worth coming back to.

Second, I'm sorry that I've been inconsistent, especially lately. Work issues figure prevalently, but also home stuff (like my wife's surgery, which went well!). I know it's probably been disruptive, especially to the concept, but it couldn't be helped.

I hope you'll share with me, if you feel like it, what you like and dislike about the story, the characters, the plotline. Please be brutally honest and I'll be the same. I want to grow as a writer and I want to know what works and what doesn't. Moreover though, I want to know what you think about Dean, Lilith, Noah, LRHG, and whoever/whatever else you care to talk about!

By the same token, if you want to pick my brain or whatever else, please feel free!

In the interests of full disclosure, one of the reasons I wrote to this pausing point in the story and am asking for feedback is that I want to determine if I should keep writing it. I would like to gauge interest and success. When I first started this, I was hoping that my readership would grow. It still could, but hasn't really (despite the pimping you all have done for me, something I greatly appreciate!). I couple that with my ever increasing work responsibilities, my ever growing children, and my desire to write other things, and I've just been wondering. I'm NOT saying I'm definitely ditching it, but just trying to figure out which direction I should take.

I have enough big picture material to continue Dean for a LONG time, but unfortunately I don't have unlimited writing opportunity. If there is interest and its worth it, I'll keep at it. Otherwise, I can certainly move on and do nothing but smile upon this experience.

So, I hope you'll share your thoughts and feelings with me, and I'll do the same.

Rough waters ahead

I just wanted to let anyone who's still following Dean's exploits that next week MAY be a little light.  For that I apologize.

I have end-of-month to do next week, and given that's its a quarter end my deadlines are tighter.  However, I'm also supposed to cost out the inventory taking we're doing today and tomorrow so I'll be working overtime and consequently will have much less time to write and prepare posts.

I still plan on writing 2-3, but that actuality or the depth of them is sort of up in the air right now.  I will try my best.

Have a good weekend, everyone.

Some old drabble

  • Mar. 20th, 2007 at 11:52 AM

Years ago I decided to take a creative writing course at a local community college.  Really, one of the worst experiences of my life.

My fellow students were great.  Well, most of them were.  Some honestly didn't belong in such a class, and I figured them to be elective-fillers.  But some really showcased their gifts.

Me?  I just wanted to write and share.  I loved reading my endeavors aloud every week and getting instant feedback face to face.  Each week I would try something different:  Comedy, science fiction, fantasy, poetry and within each one I would push myself with some additional trick/constraint.  What made the class such a disaster for me was the teacher.  It was as if they guy didn't READ.  I mean, he could throw xeroxed copies of stuff hither and yon and claimed to read the 'classics' and whatever, but he didn't know basic things like genres and different niches for writing.  He also didn't like how I wrote and made no bones about telling me and the class about it.  Not exactly a nurturing creative environment.  Still, I pressed on with what I wanted to do and got the feedback from the classmates that I found quite valuable.

This is one of those exercises, something I had fun writing.  I don't think he liked that there was action in it, and I think it totally escaped him that I wrote it without a syllable of dialogue.  I thought I'd tack it up here, on my new author page, just for grins.  So...

Promising start!

Hello all!  I wanted to take just a moment to thank everyone who's been reading, commenting, and spreading word of my Dean Orion project.  I'm very excited about it all, and I hope I'm turning out a good product.

This week I have a lot of posts because I have a lot of setting to get out.  I want to get that kind of template out so its in the back of everyone's mind as this story builds on itself.  Setting aside Dean for a moment, the Compass Point area is very vibrant and enigmatic.  And dark.

I continue to ask you to please give the link to Dean to anyone you think might be interested in keeping up with it a few times a week for a few moments.  Word of mouth is exceedingly important, and now's a good time to get people in on the story.  There's some juicy stuff already and I'm doing the exposition thing but there's not so much yet that someone might get lost.

Please continue to comment as you are moved.  It works well here, and I've seen some posts on Dean's page as well.  I'm still not sure how I'm going to handle that so much, but all my options are open.

Once again, thank you very much.  Please tell me what you think, or ask me anything you might want to know.

Take good care, and keep warm!

No turning back now!

Orion's Odyssey is up!

http://dean-orion.livejournal.com/

I'll do my best to make an enjoyable and entertaining rag.

Perhaps I'll post some of my other stuff, just for fun, later in time.  I have to learn how to do this LJ stuff.

Happy Weekend!

Soon....

Soon, Orion's Odyssey will be launched.
